Favorite races - Pumpkinman, NYC Tri, Lobsterman, Marin County Tri.
Why i race? - to remind myself why i quit smoking.
Why i love this club? - because the club gives me people and places to
connect with, because the members are unassuming and welcoming,
because Thursday night mini tri's all summer is just a little bit of
heaven.
Jeff Cole - Kennebunk
jdcole@coleharrison.com 985-0075 cell 294-1185
The laughs that this group has are never ending!
Favorite race is Timberman, directing the FireMan Races is a pretty
close second.
Haven't got many medals but sure have got a lot of good
tri friends and memories.....and crappy T-shirts.
Stephen Semo - East Waterboro
This is a great club, great bunch of athletes to train with whether
you're experienced or beginners. I joined for the camaraderie and
inspiration. And, I race so I can eat more!
Favorite races: I prefer the longer races so I would have to say
Mooseman Half, Timberman Half, West K and Lobsterman to name a
few.
Kimberly Murray - Biddeford
jmurray10@maine.rr.com 207-571-9179
Favorite races - West K - because a majority of the KBTC members
participate in this race,(also well run) and the Lobsterman for the same
reasons.
I like being a part of a supportive, encouraging group who actually give me
the motivation to get out of bed at 4:30am to train in order to accomplish
goals I would have never accomplished on my own.
Lynn Dube - Old Orchard Beach
Ldube007@yahoo.com 415-5050
I am fairly new to triathlons & love the challenge of the three individual
sports.
I joined KBTC because I swim masters with so many of the club members;
they are a great group of people!
Favorite Race: Tri for a Cure (Thank you, Julie!)

Kirsten Watson - Arundel
hummingberd@roadrunner.com 284-1872
I've wanted to join the KBTC for a couple of years, but felt a bit nervous. My reservations were of course
unfounded! Everyone has been so friendly and helpful. The KBTC is a wonderful community that provides
support, camaraderie, and a chance to train with other athletes of all age and ability levels! As a former
competitive gymnast, I struggled to find a sport that was both challenging and exciting. Triathlon has been a
perfect transition sport. It keeps me moving, and there are so many training options so I'm never bored.
Favorite races: West Kennebunk Fireman's Triathlon, Pumpkinman Triathlon # of Races Completed: 6
Best Triathlon Experience: My first open water swim in the Atlantic Ocean at the 2007 WKFT. When I got to
the beach the buoys seemed MUCH farther than I expected and the emergency personnel zipping around on jet
skis had me convinced I was going to sink! Low and behold, I not only stayed afloat but finished the whole race.
It was and still is my proudest moment!

What a great journey triathlon has been for me over the past decade.
Friends and the healthy lifestyle of the sport hold the strongest
attraction, and unexpectedly, it has provided me experiences beyond
my wildest dreams. The following quote says it perfectly: "If it's
something you love to do, it's not about the spotlight. It's about the
process, the competition. Your personal best."
Ken Botting - Old Orchard Beach
ksbotting@yahoo.com 207-590-1118
The support and rapport from club members is second to none. My
favorite tri thus far is the King Pine Triathlon, mostly because it's one
of the few that I have been healthy enough to do. I am really looking
forward to competing at the WK Firemen Tri someday.
Karen Connolly - Hollis Center

I've been tri-ing since 1999, and having a blast. Triathletes are the
greatest folks in the world. I'm a mid pack finisher but always give it
my all. I've finished distances from sprint to half iron and even an
Aquabike! An Ironman is still is on my horizon...my final frontier.
Allison Towne DiMatteo - Saco
a_towne@post.harvard.edu
I did my first tri in 1992 when I was 22 years old, as the running leg of
an Olympic-distance team. Although I did a couple of sprint distance
races in the late 1990's it wasn't until 2006 that I started racing again
consistently. Last year I did my first solo Olympic distance, and I
think I'm happy with where I am although, of course, there's always
room for improvement! I love training, love races, love finishing and
post-race festivities, love my club, love my family and their support,
it's all good.

I love the tri-training, especially with others, and also enjoy my
mountain bike and would love to find some (girl)friends to mountain
bike with. I enjoy the club's friendship and support and living in the
outside!

bonus!
Charles Melton - Biddeford

I enjoy triathlons because of the variety in training. If I had to say
which is my favorite race it would probably be the Fireman but in
reality my favorite race is whatever race I am training for at the time.
KBTC is the ONLY club that I have seen in the Northeast Region
where every member gives encouragement on the course and
cheers at the finish line. It is a great group of people!
Joe Shumaker - Biddeford Pool

I am new to triathlons and have yet to compete in my first outdoor tri but
I have registered for two this summer…Tri for a Cure and WKFire. I enjoy
the multi-sport training as it keeps me from getting bored! I currently
swim masters with a bunch of members and couldn’t ask for a better
group of people to train and compete with. You have all been so
informative and supportive and are just a great bunch all around! I look
forward to being a part of this group and to many fun times to come!
Chuck Chokel - New Castle, NH

I've been racing triathlons for over 12 years now and am most competitive in
the short races in cold weather against really old competitors!!! Looking back
at past races, I wonder why a cool weather sprinter like me has done so many
long and hot races (8 full ironmans and 21 half ironmans). I've been lucky to
complete the Hawaii Ironman in 2005 & 2006 and last month, finished the 3rd
toughest Ironman in history (based on drop out rate) at Ironman Arizona 2008.
The KBTC is the first triathlon club I've ever joined and I'm looking forward to
meeting you all. I look forward to cheering you all on and hearing teammate
support rather than the "go gray hair" I've heard in the past.

My husband Chuck got me interested in triathlons back in 1999 after buying
me a 'real' bike and teaching me how to swim. Since then I've completed 7
ironman races, 21 half ironman races and too many to count sprint and
olympic distance races. I also like to run and have completed over 20
marathons, which include 5 Boston marathons as of 2008.

I, to this date, do not have any triathlon experience. I have always admired
people who could accomplish such a grand dedication and always wished to
do one myself. A friend told me about Tri for a Cure and it touched me in a
whole different way. One of my greatest friends, a young Kennebunk
resident, has been struggling with cancer for 4 years this May and so I had a
focal point as well as the determination to say yes! I am slightly
overwhelmed, but more so very excited. I have a feeling this will be only the
start of my triathlon experience.

helpful to me,so I can be a successful triathlete.

Nick Valls - Kennebunkport

Racing triathlons is the very tip of the ice berg ! For every hour on the tri course there are days of dieting,
nutrition, preparation and training. For some of us it is super serious. I adhere to the Bill “Space Man” Lee
approach to the sport. Diet – Crispy Cream Donuts, Sports Drink – Rum and Red Bull, Favorite Run – Tying a
pork chop around my neck and letting the dog chase me around the house in hip deep snow last winter ! All
kidding aside we have had some great times in this club and we have many many more ahead of us. To do this
sport you have to be a little “not right in the head”. Even if your all good, there is a place and people for
you on KBTC. I recall a couple of summers ago in September when the wind was blowing about 25 knots and
the waves at Mother’s Beach were about 6-8 feet tall. Most everyone was speculating on whether we should
swim. About 10 or so of us said, hey we are the Kennebunk Beach Triathlon Club not the Wait for Perfect
Weather Club, threw on our wetsuits and had the best swim of our lives. We smashed through giant waves
heading out and body surfed some monsters coming back in. Teammates grabbed their children and
introduced them to one of the most thrilling natural experiences of their lives. I still hear the sounds of those
children enjoying the wave riding experience, because it all brings out the child within all of us ! Swim till you
sink, Ride till you hallucinate, run till you drop and never regret that you haven’t lived life to its fullest ! Tri-
Harder Nick Valls !

After a bit of a break it is time to get back on track. I enjoy mostly the Sprint and
Olympic Tri's however will do the occasional 70.3. Trail and road running is also
something I enjoy. Again, here I usually keep to the shorter distances. I have
competed in many local Tri's and also Timberman 2007 and Escape from Alcatraz
2005.

For me, fitness is not training for an event or some
necessary evil to be thin... rather it has been my way of life
for over 25 years. Swim, Bike, Run, Yoga, Free Weight
Training, Kayaking, Hiking or Cannonballs off the dock... I
love it all. My only triathlon was the 2007 Ironbear. I am
